Too Much But Not Enough

Not Enough by Phil Burns

Not Enough by Phil Burns

The heart is a fragile organ
Which shatters at the slightest wrong touch
This happens when you love someone
Too much but not enough

Love sets you free and cripples you
Love is like the stars above
Diamonds dancing in your eyes
Too much but not enough

She thinks he is a butterfly
She thinks that she is tough
She leaves him in a crumpled heap
He loves her too much but not enough

Love is a walk in the park and rainbows
Buttercups and a dragon named Puff
When darkness comes they disappear
Far too much yet not enough

He never quite recovers
His roads are long and often rough
He never thinks it possible
She loves him too much but not enough

Love is holding hands and smiling
Sharing jokes and all sorts of stuff
Like memories of together for so many years
Far too much and yet not quite enough

  1. Dear Pinky,

Such a bittersweet poem. It touched my heart more than words can express.

    Beautifully done and heart breaking.
Alors, c’est vrai? Brassens a raison?
    Il n’y a pas d’amour heureux?
    Tant pis. Aimer c’est mieux
    qu’etre a demi mort.

  3. It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes when reading a blog I think to myself, “Now that’s poetry!” This was one of those times, well done.

This makes me very sad. Love not equal, love out of balance is destructive. It’s disturbing that it’s light and playful in tone yet dark in words at the same time. Poor Puff is a song about love disappearing when a boy grows up. Is that what happens to love?

    • AnElephantCant tell you what happens to love, other than that it comes and, all too often, goes again.
Puff distressed him so much that he wrote a sequel, to ensure a forever happy ending!
Thank you so much for your comments, very much appreciated.

Sometimes love just gets a little lost, and needs a hand to help it find its way again. But you’re also right, sometimes it just goes away. It’s a deep mystery.

    Love is.
We tend to analyse it too much (but not enough?) 🙂

Wow, very different from your usual offerings but incredible! I love the repetition throughout, I think it amplified the sadness. Very powerful 🙂
