As one door opens
He never goes through the park without pausing to commune with the great Parasol Pine.
It is a magnificent tree, perhaps 150 years old, and he feels as though it understands his pain.
He runs his hand over the rough bark, telling it this may be his last visit.
He is being eaten alive from within by a debilitating illness which is very close to reducing him to an incompetent wreck, incapable of caring for himself.
He is already well on his way to suffering a slow and excruciatingly painful exit.
The huge branch crashes down, instantly ending his agony.
