Empty

the end by anelephantcant

the end by anelephantcant

the apartment is empty
the power is switched off
no more running water
bleak as a life without love

his few things are in boxes
his clothes in a suitcase
he remembers she walked out
with no smile on her face

she left empty-handed
except she took his heart
she carried it lightly
but it tore him apart

he thought they were happy
a bright future ahead
it now looks flat and pointless
like the uncovered bed

he has no idea what happened
he does not know why she’s gone
he just knows it is his fault
he clearly got it all wrong

a place once filled with laughter
with joy with romance
he turns the key for the last time
with no backward glance

About AnElephantCant

An artist/writer/poet combination whose blogs reflect an approach to life that celebrates nature and takes a tongue-in-cheek view of most issues. So you get rhymes and doodles, photographs and comment. Irreverent and irrelevant. Occasionally funny, sometimes serious, mostly pointless. https://anelephantcant.me/

This is so sad. I might need to play some mournful guitar now.

A well written poem of a broken heart and a broken home. I really like the way you have done this one, it is mournful and tear-laden with a finality to it as well.

  4. It’s a strange thing, we humans do, embodying our feelings about a person, a relationship into our surroundings. The strange thing is how the very same surroundings feel so different once the love has gone. You portrayed that so well…
