Rendezvous – A Love Story – Sunday Photo Fiction

AnElephantCant really believe it himself
He is shaken perhaps even stirred
For the very first time
In tale or in rhyme
AnElephant writes a quite naughty word

This is a weekly invitation to write a short piece of fiction (c. 150 words) based on a photo prompt (below) provided by Alastair.
Just click on the link to bask in the bloom of the blossoming brilliance of Al’s buddies.
But please first read AnElephant’s wilted petals as they lie scattered and withering.

Rendezvous – A Love Story

She looks around uncertainly, half surprised he isn’t there.
Then she smiles to herself as she remembers how unreliable he has always been.
My friend likes you, she told him when she was only 16 years old.
He grinned, looking in through her eyes as he always could.
I know, but I like you.
She had not been able to resist him then or ever.
They married young and, contrary to all prophesies, remained so for twenty tempestuous, painful, exciting years.
But eventually they parted for the last time, and then gradually lost touch.
Debbie, she is brought back to reality by the approach of a frail-looking old man, I am so glad you could come.
Hello, James,
she smiles again, wondering how much he has aged in the past few days, How are you keeping?
It is only then, looking at the pain in his father’s eyes and the black tie round the thin neck, that she finally realises that this time he is not just late.
If I live as long as my mother and her mother, she thinks to herself, I have another forty years to remember that bastard!
The hole in her stomach is growing bigger.

About AnElephantCant

An artist/writer/poet combination whose blogs reflect an approach to life that celebrates nature and takes a tongue-in-cheek view of most issues. So you get rhymes and doodles, photographs and comment. Irreverent and irrelevant. Occasionally funny, sometimes serious, mostly pointless. https://anelephantcant.me/

Maybe she can still find someone completely straight and leave him as having been a learning curve?

  3. I like this one Elephant. You’ve captured well the emotions that I suspect many of us would have in this situation. Your use of said naughty word was both appropriate and completely in context.
    Well done!

Living a long time is not always a good thing. At times like that you also wish for dementia 😉
