Fair Sphere – Sunday Photo Fiction

 AnElephantCant always be well behaved
He often gets into all sorts of trouble
He does nothing too grievous
But he can be mischievous
He apologises for bursting the bubble

This is a weekly invitation to write a short piece of fiction (c. 150 words) based on a photo prompt (below) provided by Alastair.
Just click on the link to find some fabulous floating fables in response to this week’s excellent prompt.
But please cast an eye over AnElephant’s whimsical offering before it goes pop!

Fair Sphere

I am a writer, so my mind tends to wander off into some pretty strange realms.
Today I am thinking about sports.
To be more accurate, ball games.
Not my area of excellence.
But I know that the majority of these are played with a round ball.
A sphere.
Soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, baseball, cricket, billiards, ten-pin, polo.
You can add your own ad nauseam.
These sports have one thing in common.
When you propel the sphere, its course is predictable.
I will skip over ice hockey.
It is played with a puck by Canadians.
Lovely people, but crazy.
But there are several major sports played with a ball that is non-spherical.
American Football, Rugby, Aussie ‘No’ Rules.
Don’t ask about that one!
In these games the ball rarely travels along the ground, and when it does the results are unpredictable and often hilarious.
And this brings me, you may think rather belatedly, to my point.
Soccer is the world’s biggest spectator sport.
They (who?) estimate 1 billion people watched the final of the 2014 World Cup.
But would it not have been so much more fun if they had played with a big fluffy dice?

About AnElephantCant

An artist/writer/poet combination whose blogs reflect an approach to life that celebrates nature and takes a tongue-in-cheek view of most issues. So you get rhymes and doodles, photographs and comment. Irreverent and irrelevant. Occasionally funny, sometimes serious, mostly pointless. https://anelephantcant.me/

Oh, has the World Cup Soccer been played? Oh well, I must have missed it 🙂 LOL Aussie “No” Rules is about right. Even we don’t understand them. Which reminds me, the Aussie Rules grand final is on this Saturday. GO THE MIGHTY SWANS!! Personally, I can’t wait for cricket season to start. I agree about the fluffy dice, but there could be a problem…what colour dice would you use? Purple with white polka dots? You make a good point, fluffy dice are much more entertaining.

Sometimes AnElephantCan drive me to distraction
With silly rhymes or unexpected fiction
But fluffy dice? Roll’em or toss’em?
    Hug’em or squeeze’em?
    What would Zizou do?
    What would you?

Nice idea! England might have got further at the last World Cup, playing with fluffy dice. 🙂

  8. I suppose I’ll be pilloried for saying I find soccer dull and the World Cup a snore. I’ve been known to watch some football but watching baseball’s rather a snore. Give me sticks and ice and hockey, in my opinion, it’s more exciting than the rest; though Canada’s national sport of lacrosse is the toughest of any athlete’s best! *waving flag and smiling*

PS: MUCH more fun with fuzzy dice or Care Bears. Not medicine balls though. That would be a bad idea, though the “dives” would at least be justified. *giggles*
