Lucky Armour – Sunday Photo Fiction

AnElephantCant tell you how delighted he is
He just has a mammoth happy attack
He says cheerio
And thank you to Joe
But he is dead chuffed that his ol’ pal Al is back

This is a weekly invitation to write a short piece of fiction (c. 150 words) based on a photo prompt (below) provided by Alastair.
Just click on the link to see some memorably mythical stories in response to this week’s excellent prompt.
But please first cast an eye over AnElephant’s sorrowful saga.

Lucky Armour

I slay a dragon.
I don’t usually hurt anything, but it was about to roast an old crone.
She is grateful, says I can have one wish.
I always thought that three was the going rate but she is old, she says, has very little magic left.
I ask for a spell to protect me, but the best she can do is lucky armour.
What is that, you ask.
Well, I did.
Apparently it keeps you safe by good fortune.
It deflects sword thrusts, lance jabs and such like.
But there is a hitch.
Well, isn’t there always?
It has to be secret.
The luck disappears if you talk about it.
So I become a great knight.
I ride at my king’s right hand, hew down his enemies, save his life.
I am a hero, which is pretty cool.
I am a legend throughout the land.
Eventually I fight the greatest warrior of our time.
He is the champion of our deadliest enemy, and he is astounded.
His stabs slip off, his swipes slither by, his hacks bounce back in his face.
You are the most elusive fighter ever, he gasps, as he falls exhausted at my feet.
It is my lucky armour, I laugh, raising my sword.
His last feeble prod slides so easily into my chest.

What a way to go. Dragged back down just as victory is in sight. For some reason, this reminded me of a soldier fighting against a nation (which is depicted as the dragon).
    Great story!
